Choose an admixture route for ready-mix concrete, precast production or mortar, with trial questions, product links and a practical sample-request checklist.

Choose the production route, then define the trial

Start with the process you need to run and the property you need to measure. A product family is a starting point for screening; a familiar chemical name alone does not establish that a grade is suitable for your materials.

Ready-mix concrete: plan for the delivery window

Compare performance at batching and at the intended placing time. NRMCA identifies constituent variability, transportation and placement conditions as quality-control considerations. Read the NRMCA quality-control guide.

Write the required consistency and retention window into the trial brief. Identify the cement and supplementary cementitious materials, aggregate source, moisture correction, batching sequence and expected concrete temperature. Choose test times that represent the actual delivery route rather than a convenient laboratory schedule.

Precast concrete: connect workability to the production cycle

Precast selection also depends on the required strength at release and the curing process. Sika’s high-early-strength overview explains why early strength matters to demoulding; it does not establish performance for AdmixChem grades.

Agree the required release criteria with the responsible production or engineering team. Record element type, filling and compaction method, target appearance, curing temperature history and test age. Compare candidate admixtures against the current approved mix using the same production assumptions.

Release agent is applied to the formwork; it is not a substitute for a concrete mix admixture. Neither a high slump nor an early-strength claim on a generic page approves demoulding or prestress transfer.

Mortar: separate the finished blend from the functional ingredient

First identify whether you are buying an additive package for wet or dry mortar, or formulating a blend from individual ingredients. Then compare the relevant grade documents and test in the complete formulation.

For a bagged formulation, describe the binder, filler, mixing-water instruction, substrate and required working properties. Do not transfer a concrete admixture dosage directly to a dry-mix recipe.

Send a sample brief that can be evaluated

  1. Process: ready-mix delivery, precast production or mortar formulation.
  2. Materials: binder names, proportions and other admixtures already used.
  3. Target: the property, test method and acceptance point that matter.
  4. Conditions: temperature, mixing, placing or curing schedule.
  5. Supply: preferred form, trial quantity, packaging and destination.

Ask for a current TDS, SDS and available batch evidence. General industry references explain the evaluation method; product suitability remains subject to grade-specific documents and trials.
